An American Viticultural Area (AVA) is a designated wine grape-growing region in the United States distinguishable by geographic features, with boundaries defined by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, United States Department of the Treasury. New York is home to seven major AVAs: Long Island, Hudson River, Champlain Valley, Finger Lakes, Niagara Escarpment, Lake Erie, and Upper Hudson. But wineries can be found all over New York, including New York City, Thousand Islands, Central New York, Lake Ontario, and Other Western NY counties.
